Distinguished Service Award 2012/2013: Sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies: Régis Vaillancourt, BPharm, PharmD, FCSHP


Dr Régis Vaillancourt is currently the Director of Pharmacy and of Integrated Pain Services at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa. Dr Vaillancourt received his Bachelor of Pharmacy from the Université Laval in 1983, his hospital pharmacy residency certificate from the National Defence Medical Centre (in affiliation with University of Toronto) in 1987, and his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Toronto in 1995.

Serving his country as a military pharmacist from 1980 to 2005, he fulfilled a variety of military pharmacist roles, such as Field Ambulance, Staff Hospital, Clinical Coordinator, Residency Supervisor, Commanding Officer of Medical Equipment Depot, Canadian Forces Clinical Pharmacy Advisor, and Pharmacy Branch Advisor. Before retiring from the military, he was responsible for directing all aspects of military pharmacy practice within the Canadian forces. He had a short deployment in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2004.

Dr Vaillancourt’s dedication to the pharmacy profession has been recognized locally, nationally, and internationally through numerous awards and appointments. In 2004, the Canadian Pharmacists Association named him Canadian Pharmacist of the Year. In addition to pharmacy-related accolades, he was awarded the Order of Military Merit by former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.

Throughout his career, Dr Vaillancourt has worked with numerous pharmacy organizations. He has served as a board member for the Ordre des pharmaciens du Québec, the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), Military and Emergency Pharmacy section, and the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, for which he was President in 2004/2005 and Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy from 2002 to 2012.

Dr Vaillancourt is currently a hospital pharmacy representative on the Council of the Ontario College of Pharmacists; Vice-President of Pharmacists without Borders— Canada, as well as Uganda mission advisor (since June 2009); and a surveyor for Accreditation Canada (since 2002).

To maintain well-rounded clinical pharmacy skills, Dr Vaillancourt provides clinical pediatric pharmacy support to Palliative and Chronic Pain services at CHEO.
