Marita Tonkin is a registered pharmacist and a graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. She completed a residency in hospital pharmacy at McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1985. She obtained her Doctorate of Pharmacy from University of Florida, College of Pharmacy, in 2007. She was awarded the Elizabeth Grace Robinson Memorial Award from the College of Pharmacy, University of Florida, in the same year.
Marita has worked as a clinical pharmacist in pediatrics, geriatrics, complex continuing care, and drug information services. She has held leadership roles in drug information, practice leadership, and pharmacy management. In 2001, Marita moved into her current senior leadership role as Chief of Pharmacy Practice for Hamilton Health Sciences. In this role, her responsibilities include clinical pharmacy practice and pharmacy students, as well as pharmacy and medication practice standards, working with interprofessional and pharmacy leadership. She has been involved in leading medication safety, medication reconciliation, patient care documentation, and technician regulation initiatives. She has chaired and served on a number of interprofessional and profession-specific hospital, regional, and provincial committees and working groups.
She has presented posters and oral sessions at conferences of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP) and other organizations, has been involved in various publications and research projects, and continues to teach pharmacy students, residents, and eHealth MSc students.
Marita has been actively involved in professional associations, including service as President of the Ontario Branch of the CSHP in 2008. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association for her second term as hospital representative, with a liaison role with CSHP Ontario Branch Council. She was awarded the Gordon Murray Ontario Branch Contribution award from CSHP Ontario Branch in 2012.

Besides her work in pharmacy, she volunteers with Girl Guides of Canada and won an Ontario Volunteer Service award in 2012 for more than 20 years of service.
